Warm Up Cold Rooms with Layered Rugs and Textiles

As a former East Coaster, I know a thing or two about harsh winters. Growing up in Wisconsin and living in New York, I’ve had my fair share of dealing with chilly homes and the struggle to stay cozy during the cold months. Now, as a California resident, I may not face the same frigid temperatures, but I still believe in creating a warm, inviting atmosphere in my living spaces – no matter the climate.

Embrace the Power of Textiles

One of my go-to tricks for warming up a room is to incorporate faux fur. Whether it’s a throw, a pillow, or even a rug, the plush, luxurious texture instantly adds a layer of coziness. In a recent design project for a client’s master bedroom, I layered a white faux sheepskin rug over a neutral jute base, and the result was absolutely magical. The soft, wintry feel was the perfect complement to the crisp white furniture.

But faux fur isn’t the only textile that can work its warming magic. Layered rugs are another favorite of mine. I love the depth and dimension that multiple rugs can bring to a space. Imagine a vintage patterned rug placed diagonally over a natural fiber base – the interplay of textures and hues creates an irresistibly cozy vibe. And don’t be afraid to experiment with different rug shapes and sizes; the key is to have fun and play with the layers.

The Power of White

While many of us tend to associate darker, moodier palettes with winter, I’m a firm believer in the transformative power of winter white. Incorporating this serene hue can instantly brighten and warm up a space. In a recent project with some empty-nester clients, we opted for a one-of-a-kind white sofa from Sofa Spectacular, and the results were stunning. By pairing the crisp white couch with textured white pillows, we created a cozy, inviting oasis perfect for snuggling up on those chilly evenings.

The Layering Continues

No cozy winter living room is complete without the addition of a throw blanket. I almost always advise my clients to incorporate this simple yet impactful accessory. Not only is it practical for keeping warm, but a well-placed throw can also add depth, texture, and visual interest to a space. Bonus points if you can find one in a plaid or buffalo check pattern – the perfect nod to the season.

And let’s not forget about lighting. Soft, warm lighting can truly transform the ambiance of a room. String lights, dimmable lamps, and even battery-operated picture lights can all work wonders in creating a cozy, intimate atmosphere. I’m currently swooning over a project we did for a client’s DC condo, where we incorporated some dreamy string lights on the terrace. The soft glow adds such a lovely touch of warmth.

The Personal Touch

While all of these design elements can certainly help warm up a space, I believe that personal touches are what truly make a room feel like a cozy, inviting haven. Accessorizing with family heirlooms, cherished keepsakes, and even handpicked coffee table books can help tell your unique story and make guests feel right at home.

In my own living room makeover, I included an antique brass compote that had been passed down from my grandmother, as well as two pieces of original art gifted to me by a close friend. These personal touches not only add warmth and character but also serve as conversation starters, allowing visitors to connect with the space on a deeper level.

Bringing It All Together

At the end of the day, creating a warm, cozy living space is all about layering – both literally and figuratively. By incorporating textured rugs, plush textiles, winter white furniture, and personal accents, you can transform a cold, uninviting room into a true sanctuary. And don’t forget the power of soft, atmospheric lighting to really set the mood.

So, whether you’re battling the frigid East Coast winters or simply looking to make your California home feel a little cozier, I encourage you to embrace these simple yet effective design strategies. Your future self (and your guests) will thank you.
