For instance, did you know that polyester is an ideal choice for upholstery due to its remarkable durability? Meanwhile, linen works wonderfully for pillows, thanks to its soft and breathable nature. And let’s not forget about the versatility of embroidery and velvet – each with their own unique characteristics and best applications.

As we delved deeper, the team also explored important fabric terminology that every fabric enthusiast should know. Concepts like double rubs (a measure of a fabric’s resistance to wear), hand (the feel of a fabric against the skin), and repeat (the length of a pattern before it repeats) were all carefully explained.

But that’s not all! They also discussed the significance of upholstery weight, which describes the heaviness of a fabric, and railroad, which refers to the direction the pattern runs across the roll, from selvage to selvage. And of course, we couldn’t forget about the pesky issue of pilling – those frustrating little lint balls that can form on fabric surfaces.

They began by explaining the fundamentals of choosing and combining textiles, showing us how to start with a fabric selection for key furniture pieces and then build upon that foundation with complementary pillows, drapes, rugs, and accessories. As we delved into the visual feast of photos and videos from the market floor, and passed around swatch examples for attendees to touch and feel, we brought the latest fabric trends to life. We demonstrated how these trends are applied in-store while remaining true to Sofa Spectacular’s timeless aesthetic, striking a delicate balance between new and classic styles.

But the real kicker was the deep dive into the buying process. We revealed that to stay ahead of the curve, we make purchasing decisions a year in advance.
