In today’s fast-paced and stressful world, finding solace and tranquility within the comfort of our own homes has become increasingly important. As the heart of the home, the living room plays a significant role in creating a calming and peaceful environment. By incorporating thoughtful design elements, decluttering, and utilizing soothing colors and textures, we can transform our living rooms into serene sanctuaries where we can unwind and recharge.
Simplify and Declutter for a Tranquil Retreat
The first step in creating a calm living room is to declutter and simplify the space. Remove any unnecessary items, excess furniture, and visual clutter. Adopt a minimalist approach, keeping only essential and meaningful items. Simplifying the room will create a sense of openness and spaciousness, allowing for a more tranquil atmosphere.
As an interior photographer, I’ve learned how to curate a space to look its best. This almost always means removing quite a few pieces. While I may overdo it to make a flat image look its best, the principle still applies to a room in general. Have you ever noticed how much better the energy of a space feels after putting things back in their place and cleaning up?
The clutter that consumes a room also consumes space in our minds, so the more we can discard, the lighter we feel ourselves. I personally like to spring clean at least twice a year and really remove the things that no longer serve or spark joy in my home.
Embrace Nature-Inspired Elements
One of the keys to creating a serene living room is to integrate nature-inspired elements. Use indoor plants such as peace lilies, snake plants, or aloe vera to introduce greenery and purify the air. Incorporate natural materials like wood, bamboo, or rattan in your furniture and accessories for an organic and grounding feel.
Nature-inspired artwork, wallpaper, or photographs from your travels can also evoke a sense of calm and connect you to the great outdoors. We have baskets within our living space as a touch of nature, as well as the fibers on the pillows on the couch. Together, these little pieces of nature invite a calm energy into the room.
Curate a Soothing Color Palette
When it comes to creating a tranquil living room, the color palette plays a crucial role. Soft and muted hues like blues, greens, grays, and earth tones have a calming effect. Incorporate these colors through wall paint, wallpaper, fabrics, and décor.
While some design blogs may suggest sticking to neutral palettes, I believe that you can absolutely use color in an intentional way that leaves breathing room for the mind to wander. In my living room, I’ve incorporated a deep blue curtain in a fun pattern, contrasted with terracotta-colored chairs and a deep blue fireplace. The rug ties the whole space together with grays and reds.
Remember, the goal is to create visual interest while maintaining a serene environment. Experiment with different shades and hues to find the perfect balance that speaks to you.
Invest in Comfortable Seating
Comfortable seating is essential for creating a soothing sanctuary in your living room. Consider plush sofas, armchairs, or oversized floor cushions that provide ample support and invite you to relax and unwind.
When it comes to upholstery, opt for soft natural fabrics like linen or cotton, as they add to the overall comfort and relaxation of the space. Layer with cozy throw blankets and pillows in soothing textures to enhance the sense of coziness.
My family and I have been dreaming of the perfect seating options for years, and we finally found them in the Article wingback chairs. They are not only beautiful but also insanely comfortable. You can sit in these chairs in any position and still be able to fall asleep. The wait was well worth it, as they have become the centerpiece of our living room.
Lighting for a Calming Ambiance
Lighting plays a crucial role in setting the mood of a room. Maximize the use of natural light by making window treatments easy to keep open or using translucent options to allow ample sunlight to filter through.
During the evening, opt for soft lighting options such as floor lamps, table lamps, or string lights to create a cozy and inviting ambiance. Avoid harsh, bright lights that can be jarring and disruptive to the calm atmosphere.
In our living room, we’re fortunate to have a skylight that adds ample light, making the deep jewel-tone blue of the fireplace even more eye-catching. We’ve also incorporated vintage lamps that were passed down from my grandmothers, adding a personal touch and a unique character to the space.
The Art of Slow Living
The thing I love about slow living is the intentionality with which we approach our spaces. I don’t believe in making cookie-cutter houses that look like everyone else’s. I want pieces that start conversations and share something about who I am. That’s what home means to me.
The living room in our home has been a work in progress over the course of three years, and it’s still not done. To me, that’s the most important thing to remember in a slow home – it’s never finished. We’re always dreaming of updates, whether it’s replacing the carpet with hardwood floors or adding a new door.
Styling a space is a creative act that can take a lifetime, and it’s well worth it. By incorporating soothing elements, nature-inspired touches, and personal mementos, we can transform our living rooms into serene sanctuaries that nourish our souls and provide a much-needed escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
Remember, your living room is not just a space, but a reflection of your unique personality and the stories you want to share. So, embrace the power of slow living and create a Soothing Sanctuary that speaks to your heart and soul.
