I recently had the pleasure of working on a Sofa Spectacular project that was truly a delight. A local entrepreneur, Travis, approached me about surprising his wife Kristina with a complete office makeover while she was away on business. Now, I’ll admit – I’m not the best at keeping secrets. In fact, I tend to get all “don’t screw this up, don’t screw this up” whenever I’m involved in a surprise. But this project sounded too good to pass up.

After our initial meeting, Travis and I spent the next three months meticulously planning every last detail. We lined up the tradespeople, ordered all the furniture, and even came up with a fake story to tell Kristina in case she came home early. (“Oh, I’m just the internet fixer!”) Let me tell you, when the big transformation weekend finally arrived, everything that could have gone wrong – did. Items arrived late, in the wrong size, or on backorder. But you know what they say – you just have to roll with the punches and do your best.

A Color Explosion

Once we finally had all the pieces in place, the real magic began. The backdrop for the entire room design was the wall color – a stunning Naive Peach by Sherwin-Williams. I absolutely love this color because it’s not too orange, not too pink – it’s the perfect soft peach that sets the tone for the whole space.

Now, here’s where things got really interesting. Travis mentioned that he and Kristina both love quirky, unexpected elements in their design. Challenge accepted! As I was finalizing the color palette, I had the typical green, brass, and navy tones all lined up, and it just felt a little… predictable. That’s when I decided to throw in a burnt orange accent. Let me tell you, that touch of unexpected color completely transformed the room from “pretty” to “something special.”

The Power of Contrast

You see, when it comes to adding visual interest to a space, color contrast is key. If you find yourself feeling bored with a room, take a step back and analyze the color scheme. How many main colors are you working with? Are they too similar? Could they be a little too predictable?

In the case of the Sofa Spectacular office makeover, that burnt orange was the perfect addition. It took the space from “pretty” to “wow, that’s really special.” And you know what else made it special? A stunning piece of wall art from a local artist, Michael Gute, that Travis and Kristina had specifically requested.

The rest of the room came together beautifully – an ultra-cozy armchair from West Elm, a simple yet elegant desk from World Market, and custom window treatments from Select Blinds. But it was the unexpected color combo and the personalized artwork that really made this space shine.

Sofa Spectacular, Truly Spectacular

When I look at the final result, I’m so proud of how it turned out. This fun, comfy, quirky, and elegant room is the perfect reflection of Travis and Kristina’s style. And it just goes to show that sometimes, all it takes is a little unexpected flair to turn a good space into a truly Sofa Spectacular one.
