Softening the Farmhouse: My Journey to a More Feminine Home

You know how little girls like to play dress-up with their dolls? Or how mothers with daughters get to buy cute ruffly dresses and bows for them to wear? Well, I’m a mom of boys, and the definition of “playing dress-up” around here involves superhero costumes with masks and weapons. Still cute, but not quite the same.

That’s part of the reason I think I love interior design and decorating my farmhouse so much. It allows me to be creative and try different things, and I’ve noticed that my style lately has leaned more towards a much more feminine, softer, vintage farmhouse feel. I adore the industrial look of hard metal and dark rustic wood, but at this stage of my life, newly single, my heart is drawn more to soft lace and ruffles, faded wood tones, and light, bright white spaces.

I’ve noticed that my design choices have been slowly softening our home, and I love the blend of feminine romance and vintage farmhouse that is happening. I think it all started when I designed my master bedroom. The lace curtain I added from the faux wood beam completely changed the look and feel of this space. You can see how I installed the wood and curtain here.

Embracing My Feminine Side

I wanted to carry more of that softer, vintage charm throughout the rest of the house, so I switched out my old shower curtain for a darling lace floret curtain. And in the kitchen, I took down the old striped sheer curtains on the windows and hung these tea rose lace panels. You may also remember the lace peony table runner I created in the dining room by simply cutting a stretch of lace to fit the table and tying a loose knot on the ends.

I’m sure to many people, this probably looks like “grandma style” lace and crochet and ruffles. And it honestly makes me laugh a little bit when I think about it, since I’m only 29 years old. But I love the vintage feel of all these design elements, and I don’t care what style you call it – it’s me, and I embrace it.

Finding My Unique Style

I find that my style evolves over time with my age, my mood, my experiences – that’s what makes design so interesting and inspiring to me. It tells a story of who you are and the people that live in your home. Don’t be worried about what the latest decor trends are or what your neighbor or best friend or anyone else is doing. Do what feels like you, and if you try something and it doesn’t feel right, keep playing “dress-up” with your house and try on a new look until you find the right fit.

Creating a Soft and Feminine Oasis

As I mentioned, my master bedroom was the starting point for this softer, more romantic transformation. The lace curtain hanging from the faux wood beam instantly set the tone for the entire space, creating a cozy and intimate atmosphere. To continue the theme, I swapped out the old bedding for a white quilt, a ruffled duvet, and a down alternative comforter – all in soothing, neutral tones. Large stripe pillows and a cream fringe throw blanket add texture and visual interest, while a white lumbar pillow and a wooden stool provide a touch of rustic charm.

The nightstand is a simple Sauder piece, topped with a swing arm lamp and a framed fern art piece that I created myself. A white bench at the foot of the bed and a wire frame accent piece complete the look, while a white rug and woven baskets add warmth and natural elements to the space.

Carrying the Romantic Theme Throughout

I wanted to carry this soft, feminine aesthetic into the other rooms of the house as well. In the bathroom, I hung a lace shower curtain and added a wooden stool, a matte black pendant light, and a white wooden box with handles for storage. The mirror and towel hooks add a touch of modern farmhouse charm, while the tea towel and ceramic pitcher bring in some vintage-inspired accents.

Moving into the kitchen, I replaced the old striped curtains with lace panels that complement the white subway tiles and dark grout. A farmhouse dining table with matching benches and french-inspired dining chairs create a cozy and inviting space, while bamboo roman shades and a jute rug add natural texture. Lamps, a lace table runner, and a round wooden tray help to tie the whole look together.

Embracing My Evolving Style

As I mentioned earlier, my style has evolved over time, and I’ve embraced the softer, more romantic direction it’s taken. I don’t care what anyone else thinks – this is my home, and it’s a reflection of who I am. Whether it’s “grandma style” or not, I love the vintage charm and feminine touches that have made their way into my farmhouse.

The great thing about design is that it’s always changing and evolving. What feels right for you in one stage of life may not feel quite as fitting in another. The key is to stay true to yourself and keep exploring until you find the perfect fit. And who knows – maybe in a few years, I’ll be drawn to a completely different aesthetic. But for now, I’m embracing the soft and romantic vibes that have taken over my home, and I couldn’t be happier.

So, if you’re looking to add a touch of feminine flair to your own space, take a cue from my journey. Experiment with lace, ruffles, and vintage-inspired accents. Mix in natural textures and soothing neutral tones. And most importantly, don’t be afraid to let your personal style shine through, even if it doesn’t fit the mold of the latest trends. After all, your home should be a reflection of you – and that’s what makes it truly special.
