As an alternative wedding florist, I’ve had the pleasure of working with many bold and daring couples who refuse to be confined by tradition. Recently, I had the opportunity to be the florist for a Cruella-inspired editorial shoot, and let me tell you, it was an absolute delight! When I arrived at the Woolwich Works venue, an old fireworks factory turned multi-use arts space in East London, I was immediately drawn in by the industrial backdrop. The exposed brick and original features, steeped in history, created the perfect canvas for the bold, blood-red roses and crisp white florals I had brought to style the shoot.

You see, I wanted to showcase Cruella’s strong, edgy energy, and that meant breaking away from the traditional romantic white roses. Instead, I created a bridal bouquet with a twist, using giant dahlias and ranunculus. These alternative wedding flowers added a modern, unconventional twist to the hand-tied bouquet, bound with a red silk ribbon and a single black dried lagurus shoot to tie the red, white, and black wedding floral theme together.

For the table florals, I played with a variety of receptacles to offset the black and white Dalmatian décor. Gothic Victorian black ornamental vases, white china, and long oval fluted glass created an eclectic, edgy, and modern tablescape. These unique vessels allowed my dark and moody florals to take center stage, with the velvety red petals of the reflexed roses popping against the Dalmatian tapered candles. I finished the non-conventional bud vases with bright white and intense merlot-toned ranunculus, creating an atmosphere of dark romance that would make any modern, edgy bride swoon.

And let’s not forget the cake table! I absolutely adored dressing this with my favorite alternative wedding flower arrangement, using a white human heart vase. Deep crimson, wine-hued reflexed roses, striking and eye-catching, were combined with a playful mix of white delphiniums, orchids, carnations, ranunculus, and sweet peas. The result was a dramatic, statement-making piece that would be the perfect centerpiece for a dark fairy tale bride like Cruella.

Despite the challenge of the extreme Arizona heat (hello, 115-degree days!), we managed to create a truly stunning and unexpected floral masterpiece. Originally, I had envisioned a more muted palette, playing off the contrast of the two locations. But when the dress I had ordered came in as a vibrant shade of pink instead of the off-white I had expected, I had to rethink the entire shoot.

That’s when I decided to embrace the bold, fiery hues and really lean into the drama. I added pops of coral and maroon to mimic the colors of the flames that had once torn through the now ash-covered field. The result was a stunning, organic-looking bouquet created by the talented Randi of Carte Blanche Floral, complete with a flower hat that was simply to die for.
