The Furniture Designer’s Journey

I’ve always been a maker at heart. Even as a child, I found endless joy in dreaming up creative projects and bringing them to life. Whether it was making up games, crafting intricate art pieces, or designing elaborate fort structures, the process of creation has always been my passion.

So, it’s no surprise that today, as the founder of Sofa Spectacular, a custom sofa company in the UK, I get to indulge my love for design and craftsmanship every single day. Helping our clients craft their dream sofas is truly the perfect blend of my two greatest loves – problem-solving and bringing visions to reality.

Inspiration Comes from the Unexpected

Much like my childhood days, the spark of inspiration for a new design can strike at the most unexpected moments. Just the other day, I was cleaning out our basement and came across an old art project from my college days. As I rediscovered the piece, I was struck by its potential.

“If you ignore the crazy sparkly bird nest in the bottom right corner, it’s actually a great piece of art – or it will be when I’m done with it.”

The project consisted of three different renderings of the same image – one in ink, one in pencil crayon, and one in watercolor marker. I had then recreated the image in 3D, resulting in the “crazy bird’s nest” that had seen better days. But the core of the project, those three distinct interpretations of the same subject, sparked an idea.

Crafting a Custom Masterpiece

I knew just the spot where this reborn art piece would shine – above the bed in my guest bedroom/craft room. But as I went to frame the three sketches, I realized that custom mats can be shockingly expensive. That’s when a new idea took flight.

I learned how to cut my own photo mats, a skill that has saved me hundreds of dollars and allowed me to truly make the space my own. And that got me thinking – how can I empower our Sofa Spectacular clients to craft their own custom creations?
