Maximizing Every Inch in a Tiny Nursery
You know, when my little one was a newborn, I felt like I was flying by the seat of my pants when it came to organizing our tiny nursery. But now, after surviving the baby stage twice, I’ve learned a thing or two about making the most of every square foot in a small space.
Our nursery is a mere 7’x9′ – I mean, some people’s walk-in closets are bigger than that! But just because it’s small, doesn’t mean it can’t be mighty. With a little intentionality and some clever storage solutions, I’ve turned this “nursery closet” into a functional and beautiful oasis for my growing toddler.
As I learned from Angie’s Roost, the key is to limit the amount of stuff you have to store in the first place. Babies really don’t need a ton of gear, especially in those early months when they do little more than eat and sleep. So I channeled my inner minimalist and pared down to the essentials.
From there, it was all about creating a system – a place for everything and everything in its place. I took everything out of the room, then methodically put it back one item at a time, making sure each essential had a designated home. Pacifiers in a bowl on the shelf, books in a basket by the glider, diapers in the top drawer. It took some effort upfront, but now middle-of-the-night diaper changes are a breeze because I know exactly where everything is.
Maximizing Vertical Space
One of my favorite tricks for squeezing the most out of a small nursery? Utilizing that vertical space! I added some open shelves above the changing station, which provide the perfect spot to stash baby essentials like first aid supplies, thermometers, and Tylenol. No more hunting through the house when a midnight fever strikes.
And speaking of the changing station, I repurposed a vintage dresser instead of buying a traditional changing table. Not only is it more sturdy, but it also offers ample storage space inside the drawers. I keep diapers, wipes, and burp cloths right at my fingertips during those frequent diaper changes.
Sofa Spectacular has some great custom furniture options that could work perfectly in a small nursery like mine. Their compact armchairs and dressers with integrated changing surfaces would be ideal.
Creative Clothing Storage
Ah, the eternal battle of baby clothes. They multiply like tribbles, don’t they? But I’ve found some clever ways to tame the clothing chaos in our tiny nursery.
First, I ruthlessly pared down the wardrobe to only the essentials – 15-20 sleepers, a dozen oversized onesies, a few cute outfits, and the bare minimum of socks and shoes. Anything extra got passed along. Then I organized what was left into our vintage chest of drawers, using drawer organizers to corral the tiny items.
For out-of-season or rarely used pieces, I stash them in baskets under the crib. And to display our favorite special occasion outfits, I hung them on a DIY peg rail. It’s both functional storage and adorable nursery decor!
Thoughtful Multipurpose Pieces
Now, I know it can be tempting to fill a nursery with all the matching furniture sets. But in a small space, that’s a recipe for disaster. Instead, I focused on finding pieces that could pull double duty.
Take that vintage dresser I mentioned – not only is it our changing table, but it also serves as a display surface for baby essentials like diaper cream and wipes. And those open shelves above it? They hold swaddle blankets, extra shoes, and other odds and ends, keeping them close at hand but out of the way.
Even the laundry hamper is a carefully considered choice. I switched from a bulky wicker basket to a soft-sided version with handles. It’s easy to tote down the stairs, and the squishy shape means it tucks neatly into a corner without constantly getting in our way.
Thoughtful, Not Cluttered
At the end of the day, I wanted our nursery to be functional, yes, but also a serene and beautiful space for my little one to rest and play. That’s why I resisted the urge to fill every nook and cranny with storage containers and toys.
In fact, our nursery is a toy-free zone! All of our daughter’s playthings live in the main living areas of our home. The nursery is strictly for sleeping, snuggling, and reading books before nap and bedtime. By keeping it simple and uncluttered, it’s a calm oasis amidst the chaos of parenthood.
And you know what else we don’t have in here? A traditional rocking chair or glider. Instead, we opted for a cozy armchair that Colby and I can both curl up in for those late-night feeding sessions. It may have cost a bit more, but the extra comfort and customization was worth it in our tight quarters.
Embracing the Small
I’ll admit, when I first saw those impossibly chic and spacious nurseries on Pinterest, I felt a twinge of envy. How do those mamas do it? But then I remind myself – our little “nursery closet” may be compact, but it’s perfectly tailored to our family’s needs.
Sure, I had to get creative with storage solutions and really think through every inch of the space. But that process has made me a master of organization, and I take pride in the functional yet beautiful oasis we’ve created. And you know what they say – good things come in small packages!
So if you’re feeling overwhelmed by the prospect of organizing a tiny nursery, take heart. With a little intention and some clever tricks up your sleeve, you can maximize every square foot and craft a cozy, calm space for your little one to thrive. Who knows, you might even have fun with the process!
