Global Bazaar – Eclectic Mix of Cultural Influences

As a third-generation Californian, I’ve always been fascinated by the diverse cultural tapestry that weaves through our world. From the vibrant markets of Nairobi to the charming Mexican-themed boutiques of Old Town San Diego, the global bazaar has captivated my senses and ignited my creativity. Join me on a journey as I explore the eclectic mix of influences that have shaped my artistic vision and inspired the Sofa Spectacular brand.

Traveling the World, Discovering Inspiration

My story begins with a bold decision to venture beyond the familiar confines of California. At the age of 18, I packed my bags and set off for Nairobi, Kenya, determined to attend an international university. It was there that I met my husband, David, who was living in the Netherlands at the time. Our chance encounter was the start of a lifelong adventure that would take us around the globe, exposing us to a multitude of cultures and artistic traditions.

After two years in Kenya, we returned to San Diego where I completed my undergraduate degree, majoring in Art History. I had initially applied to the Fine Arts program, but without a formal portfolio, I was redirected to the Art History path. This detour, however, would prove to be a blessing in disguise, as it opened my eyes to the rich tapestry of global artistic expression.

During my college years, I found a wonderful job at the Bazaar del Mundo in Old Town San Diego, a Mexican-themed environment that surrounded me with beautiful artwork and a vibrant cultural atmosphere. This experience deepened my appreciation for the diverse influences that shape our perceptions of art and design.

Embracing the Seductiveness of Polymer Clay

As my academic journey unfolded, I found myself drawn to the versatility and allure of polymer clay. In the late 1990s, I took a caning class at the Clay Factory in Escondido, which sparked a lifelong fascination with this medium. Although I never made another cane, I was captivated by the chameleon-like properties of polymer clay and its ability to be transformed through painting, stamping, and embedding.

My artistic practice evolved into a form of journaling in clay, where I used the medium as a canvas to explore the eclectic mix of cultural and religious influences that had always captivated me. From the vibrant Mexican folk art to the Medieval and Early Renaissance aesthetics, I found myself drawn to the rich symbolism and iconography that permeated these artistic traditions.

As I continued to experiment and push the boundaries of polymer clay, I discovered the thrill of altered art, a movement that had been quietly evolving over the previous decade. This discovery opened up a whole new realm of creative exploration, allowing me to combine a variety of mediums and techniques to create truly unique and personalized pieces.

Sharing My Passion through Teaching

Teaching has played a significant role in my artistic journey, as it has kept me on my toes and challenged me to continually push the boundaries of my work. Through opportunities to teach at Artfest and other mixed-media art retreats, I discovered the joy of sharing my passion and techniques with others.

It was during this time that I was given the chance to write my book, “Mixed Media Mosaics,” published in 2007. This experience not only allowed me to share my creative process with a wider audience but also inspired me to explore new avenues of expression.

The Evolution of My Artistic Style

My artistic style has evolved over the years, reflecting the diverse cultural influences that have shaped my worldview. Early on, the Mexican folk art combined with Medieval and Early Renaissance aesthetics formed the foundation of my work. However, as I continued to explore and experiment, I found myself drawn to the Baroque and Colonial art styles, captivated by their rich textures and ornate details.

In recent years, I have been delving into the realms of alchemy and mysticism, exploring the dark and edgy aspects of these fascinating subjects. I often incorporate fragments of text in my work, allowing the viewer to bring their own interpretations and personal meanings to the pieces.

One of the most meaningful series I’ve created are the mirrors I’ve done in honor of my parents, who both passed away from complications of Alzheimer’s disease. These deeply personal works serve as a cathartic outlet, allowing me to process my grief and pay tribute to the loved ones who have shaped my life.

The Joy of Creating and Sharing

The drive for self-expression has been a constant force in my artistic journey, and I believe that the joy of creating is a universal experience that we all share. Through my work, I aim to inspire and connect with others, encouraging them to explore their own creative potential and find meaning in the process of making.

As I look to the future, I’m excited about the prospect of continued travel, teaching, and further explorations in polymer clay. Perhaps I’ll even find the time to write a second book, sharing my experiences and insights with a new generation of artists.

The global bazaar of cultural influences has been a constant source of inspiration for me, and I’m honored to be able to bring a touch of that eclectic flair to the Sofa Spectacular brand.
